Introducing Juliette Foley (interim ORSNZ Industry Representative)

Where I am now
I am currently working as a Senior Optimisation Engineer at Beca, where I apply data-driven analysis to a diverse range of operational and strategic problems. My work spans optimising production schedules for manufacturing clients such as bottling companies, evaluating trade-offs in flavour changeovers and cleaning schedules, and determining optimal warehouse sizing and inventory policies under uncertainty. Across these projects, I use optimisation and modelling techniques to support decision-making, balancing cost, efficiency, and risk in complex, real-world systems.

Where I was
Previously, I was a climate change consultant and recently completed a Masters focused on a bi-objective optimisation model that reduces both cost and emissions in meal planning. I developed an end-to-end pipeline that transforms recipes, emissions data, and supermarket prices into Pareto-optimal meal plans, achieving up to 62% cost and 68% emissions reductions. The work also highlighted key structural insights, including the high emissions intensity of protein constraints and efficiency limits in ingredient-sharing across recipes, demonstrating practical pathways for more sustainable and affordable food systems.
